BOOK REVIEW: The Perils of Being Moderately Famous

The Perils of Being Moderately Famous by Soha Ali Khan

Category: Non-fiction

Soha Ali Khan, an Indian actress, a writer, a mother, is endlessly gossiped to be a bit less famous than her other family members. So, she cunningly uses this point for her book title and that's quite impressive!

Next, we move on to the contents of the book which is all about her life till date. So, here is how she starts, "If you have bought/borrowed/shoplifted this book in the hopes of finding out the secret behind Kareena's glowing complexion or what Bhai really meant when he talked about the difference between nepotism and eugenics, then, unfortunately, this is not the book for you." She also thinks that she's on the wrong side of thirties and that she, getting a satisfying a role in industry is as rare as a pothole-free road on Mumbai Highway during monsoons.

It feels that she's making fun of her life, doesn't it? But you should know that, sometimes a great emotional distress is hidden behind piles of jokes. Being called as 'She's Saif Ali Khan's sister' and not Soha Ali Khan, sometimes feels bad or sometimes the irritation just gives way to submission, she says. But anyhow, it s true, she was his sister, she is and always will be!

This book shares every piece of emotion that a family or an individual experiences from life. From her father's days as a cricketer to his losing an eye, from her mother's life before marriage to her mother's days as a Bollywood actor, and from Soha's days as a Nawab princess to days at Balliol College, Oxford, took a lot of efforts to move on. Hence, this book is unputdownable for someone who loves her as a person, or who loves travelling and who loves her way of writing with whiteness and humour.

Last but not the least, a great feature of this book are the funny illustrations (I must say cartoons!) of her family members. To add, from her neonatal photographs to that of her wedding, everything just adds plus points to this book.

Enough of revelation, if you got charged by this review, do buy this book and drown yourself into her unreciprocated emotions. And yes, as a gift, you would find a newborn baby, Inaaya Naumi, stealing your hearts with her lovely eyes!!!

I rate this book 3.5/5.
